While we know that black jack comes from the European continent, there is some disagreement as to which card game it takes most after . The French game of Vingt Et Un and the Spanish game Ventiuna are the two main games that black jack is derived from. One who knows the history of the game will be better able to

During the 17th century the French game Vingt Et Un became a popular diversion . In it the player had to reach a score of 21 in order to win, making it very similar to modern day black jack . Vingt Et Un is believed to have lent itself heavily to

The name "black jack" is said to have derived itself from a similar instance in Vingt Et Un that occurred when a player would receive the ace of spades and a jack as a winning hand . However, arguably, the term itself originated from an advertising push by gambling houses in the United States to increase the popularity of black jack when it was initially introduced to Americans . A bonus of 10-to-1 was offered in many dens for a player who managed to receive an ace of spades and a jack of clubs or spades . The term, whether from Vingt Et Un or not, stuck with the game to the present day .
The Italian game of Seven and a Half is also believed to have contributed to the development of black jack . Black jack moves and actions all have special terms associated with them . The term "bust" in black jack means when someone goes over 21 in their total score. This is believed to have originated from Seven and a Half . The same term would be used in Seven and a Half whenever a player's score exceeded that game's maximum .
At the same time as these two games were gaining in popularity , the game Ventiuna was becoming very popular in Spain . Ventiuna, which means "21" in Spanish, was introduced to the masses in a short story . The author of this story about two cheaters at Ventiuna was none other than Miguel de Cervantes of Don Quixote fame . The rules of Ventiuna are similar to Vingt Et Un and Seven and a Half .
Ventiuna, Seven and a Half, and Vingt Et Un are all considered to be the original contributors of the present day game of black jack played in the U.S. and may claim their influence on the rules, play, and terms of black jack nowadays .
Black jack migrated to America in the wake of the French Revolution . At the time America had no rules restricting gambling . Of course, as time passed and corruption set in, states began to heavily regulate gambling to the point of banning it in most places . During this time, the popularity of black jack among the states soared rather than be repressed as was the original intent . Nevada legalized gambling, bringing about the current age of black jack. And thus ends this
