Building Brand Identity Using Binding
Many businesses suffer from a serious case of multiple personality disorder. Do you think I should buy my own skis?
I'm 16 and for the first time I've been looking into buying my own skis. I have been skiing since I was about 5 only going a few times until recently. The last 4 years I have been skiing with my family and go several times to glenshee (a small resort 80 miles away in Scotland) with my friends. I have reached the stage where I am carving black slopes with ease, starting to grind rails and do quite big jumps in the parks and over the last few years have been really enjoying deep powder off piste skiing.
I have found a suitable pair of skis with bindings, poles and bag for £220 that will be a step up from what I usually rent. I don't have any boots either and my feet won't grow very much more now. Most boots cost about £150. I worked over the summer and have about £800 saved up. The biggest advantage will be not having to hire at Glenshee which will take up 1 hour of the morning and they give you crap skis.
Should I buy them?
It depends on how many days per year you ski.
Do the math, and see how much you would spend on rentals over the next few years. Compare that to the cost of purchasing your own skis.
Don't forget to factor in other costs of owning your own skis - You'll have to pay to get them tuned up occasionally, and don't forget about the trouble of lugging around skis vs. waiting to rent at the skifield. (this will be especially apparent when you decide to fly overseas for a ski holiday, and drag a ton of gear through an airport, taxi & train) Also keep in mind that your skis will be outdated in a few years, while rental skis will always (hopefully!) be more modern.
You should absolutely, positively, definitely buy your own boots! Boots are by far the most important part of your kit, and having a pair that you can work with to get a perfect fit is extremely important. When you have good fitting boots, bring them to the rental shop and they'll outfit you with skis. I recommend spending a lot of time shopping around to find a set of boots that provide an excellent fit. It will surely pay off in the long run.
If you're concerned about the crap quality of the skis there, inquire about hiring something better than the "standard" beginner package, most decent shops will have a few pair of high-end skis to rent (for a higher price)
And, poles are poles, just buy some crappy £3 poles at yard sale somewhere, they're all the same.
Overall, I recommend buying some good fitting, high quality boots, and only buy some skis when you already know which pair you really like and want to own.
