Going For The Gold
Every four years one of my favorite events happens – The Winter Olympics! My husband, Kenneth, and I were ski instructors for years so we can appreciate all that goes into being an Olympic athlete, especially the skiing part. We enjoy watching the Olympics for that reason and many others.
One thing that always gets me is pride in my country. I also have pride in the athletes that work so hard for their moment. One tiny mistake and it could cost them years of preparation. I swell up with pride for the athletes as they accept their medals, especially the USA athletes when they win Gold and our National Anthem is played all over the world.
I can relate to their pride as I know how I felt the day I won a Bronze medal in downhill skiing – giant slalom. Not in the Olympics mind you, but it was still a great accomplishment for me. I had a feeling of great pride as I thought back to the many hours of preparation that went into that win.
Being able to win that medal took years of Believing, Learning, Practicing, and Teaching.
I started skiing when I was nine. I went out with the belief that I could do it, and that belief made it happen. I was just a beginner of course, but I made it up and down the mountain at least.
Then, when I got older, I wanted to get better at skiing. I loved the sport, and the atmosphere that came along with it. I took skiing as a PE class for two years while in college. I had lessons two days a week, and learned as much as I could from my instructors. I also practiced several hours each week. I received an A both years and was able to ski from the top of the mountain almost effortlessly.
Several years after graduating from college, I decided to try out for a position as a ski instructor. The tryout was very difficult, but I had the belief in myself that I could accomplish anything I wanted to. I also knew that I had learned a lot in the past, and had practiced a lot for the tryout. The tryout involved a lot more learning, and a lot more practicing.
In the tryout, they taught us how to teach skiing to beginners. When it came time for the test, we were graded on not only our ability to ski, but also on our ability to teach. I had been a college computer teacher for years before this, so I had been learning and practicing my teaching skills for a while. I had also been a swim instructor, water safety instructor, and lifeguard instructor for years. My computer and swim students had learned, progressed, and given me great evaluations, so I believed that I was a good teacher.
I did become a ski instructor and began to teach others. Teaching something to others is the best way I know to get better at something. Teaching makes you break down your discipline to its finest points. This reinforces what you have already learned and practiced on a detailed scale.
As ski instructors, our learning and practicing was never over. We took lessons almost every day. We learned how to ski better, and how to teach better. We practiced everyday to get better. The more I learned and practiced, the better I taught. The more I taught, the better I skied. All of this gave me even more belief in myself, and the cycle continued.
My first two years as an instructor earned me two awards – Rookie of the Year and the Energizer award. I won these awards because of my dedication for improvement, and my love of being on skis and helping others to learn my passion.
When I met my husband, Kenneth, he had never skied before. I told him that I would be on the mountain from December to March and if he wanted to see me, he needed to learn to ski. He agreed and we headed out on the snow for our first lesson. Kenneth had belief in himself that he could succeed. That was all he needed to get the "snow" ball rolling.
I had taught many people to ski at this point, so I knew what to do to progress him through the process. Kenneth is an athlete and a believer, so it didn't take long before he was flying down the hill right beside me. At least he thought he was flying – although he was only on the bunny hill! HaHa!
Kenneth is not one to just figure something out and go have fun with it. He practiced every day. He wanted to get better. He skied with instructors, always, so he could learn everything they knew. He listened and watched, and practiced, A LOT.
The very next season I insisted Kenneth try out for ski instructor. He had the belief in himself. He had spent a season learning from me and the other ski instructors. He had practiced his techniques every time he put on his skis. He was ready.
There were over 100 skiers and snowboarders trying out for positions. Kenneth's belief in himself and the many hours he had spent learning and practicing paid off. His tryout score landed him in second place, only behind a skier who had been on ski patrol for many years.
He became a ski instructor and began teaching others. This of course made him a better skier. He continued to learn and practice. He received two awards in his first two years – Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Skier. His dedication and love for the sport had gained him great accomplishment. I am so proud of him. Well, he did have a good teacher, me! HeeHee!
My husband and I are also members of Professional Ski Instructors of America. This is a group of skiers that share the main goal of improvement in skiing. And guess what the group does. We learn from each other. We teach each other. We practice together. We believe in each other. We believe in the improvement of our sport of skiing, and in teaching others our passion.
My husband and I have learned that the best way to improve at something is to teach it to someone else. This, of course, is preceded and followed by learning and practicing yourself. Learning, practicing, and teaching never end. And belief in yourself is not an option.
In order to win an Olympic Gold, you must be dedicated to your sport. You must first believe in yourself. Then you must spend countless hours learning and practicing.
Do you think an Olympic athlete could win the Gold on learning and practicing alone? Not going to happen. Without the belief in their ability to do so, they don't stand a chance.

i have a size 11 boot should i get a wide snowboard?
im looking to either getting an rome anthem which isa 161 and 25 cm at the waist or flag which is 160 and 26.1 cm at the wiast. Im a size 11 boot so im right at the cusp between wide and regular. I ridden the option wide boards before and loved the response but i know its you get and quicker response from regular boards, im just worried about my toe hanging over the edge, so im not sure if i should get the wide
